GRRM speaks

So, George R. R. Martin posted his thoughts on all the haters out there who are griping about the much-delayed A Dance with Dragons. John Scalzi and Charlie Stross chime in as well.

In a nutshell: Creating something this in-depth and enjoyable isn’t easy; ADwD will be done when it’s done. Sucks, yeah I know, but he’s got a very valid point.

He had a valid point when he stated the book was 75% done back in 2005. At this point it’s been long enough that I barely remember where the plot was, and I don’t have the time to even skim the 4 tomes already out to refresh. I’m pretty much ready to say just call me when the series is finished. I don’t feel like waiting another 4 years for the last book.

Yeah, one of things about committing yourself as a consumer to investing in a long series is that you tend to expect to see the plot moving forward every year or two. Maybe they should have Brandon Sanderson finish off this series as well. >.>

    Don’t even joke about that.

Anyway, I can definitely see where he’s coming from about the bitching. I honestly haven’t even thought about the series in quite some time. Now that I do, it’s somewhat annoying, but I have other things to worry about.

One thing to go along with this, though, is that he doesn’t really have any right to complain when the sales of the next book don’t live up to the last few. I’ve gone out and dropped the money on the hardcovers of the last three as soon as they’ve come out. I can guarantee you that won’t be happening this time.

Yeah, I’m guessing he’s not in it for the money – he seems to have enough other sources of income to get by. I won’t be buying the hardcover, either, for obvious reasons. =P As long as the rest of it is of the same quality as the previous volumes, I’ll be picking up paperbacks once the series is completed, but I don’t think I’ll be buying them as soon as they come out. Unless they’re *really* good.

p.s. have you read any of those Abercrombie books yet? I think you’d enjoy them.

Oh yeah, get Mike started on those books too. He’ll never sleep like you, and he won’t have no one to remind him to go to bed. For shame! :P
