The End and the Beginning
Holiday reading…

Pirate Sun by Karl Schroeder
The third book of Virga, although I don’t think this is the last one in the series, however if the series were a trilogy, then this would be the end and the title of this post would make much more sense. Uh, right. Onward we march…
Schroeder continues to flesh out his Virga universe, adding more detail to the how and why the world of Virga is constructed the way it is and we also get some tantalizing glimpses of a dire new “threat”, Artificial Nature and the things used to combat it. If you liked the first two Virga installments, you’ll probably like this as well. Schroeder continues to turn out consistent works, but still remains below the “outstanding” threshold.
3.8/5 gogs.

Prador Moon by Neal Asher
With this relatively short book in the Polity universe, Neal Asher takes us back to the beginning of the Prador War, following the path of Jebel “U-Cap” Krong and introducing some other familiar characters as well. Definitely a stand-along novel with a decent ending, you’ll find plenty of Asher’s action-packed sequences as well as delightfully detailed biological descriptions of the Prador and the environment around.
4/5 gogs.

Shadow of the Scorpion by Neal Asher
Two Asher books in one post! New record!! Wowowow. >.> Anyway, Shadow of the Scorpion explores Ian Cormac’s formative years, starting at childhood and extends into the beginning of his career as an ECS agent. Pretty much what you’d expect from an Asher Polity novel, but in his attempts to delve into the psychology behind Cormac’s outlook, he tends to fall a bit short. Despite this failing, it’s still a pretty good read and worth checking out if you’re a fan of Asher.
3.8/4 gogs.
