Brass Man

Brass Man cover

Brass Man by Neal Asher.

The third installment in Asher’s Ian Cormac/Polity series. Asher seems to be following a formula in writing these novels: established main characters - good guy and villain - who lay traps for one-another, introduce a couple of new characters who follow a storyline that is seemingly unrelated to the main plot, and throw in some interesting (and quite alien) wildlife to flesh things out, then tie the three together at the end and publish!

Fortunately, Asher is a good enough writer to keep things interesting, but this book suffers from having gone to the formula well one too many times. Still a good read, but not on the same level as his earlier Polity books.

4/5 gogs.

Ugh

Renegade's Magic cover

Renegade’s Magic by Robin Hobb.

Ugh. That about sums up the conclusion of Hobbs’ Soldier Son trilogy. The first half of the book was so-so but it then rapidly descended into, in a word, crap. Not much happened in the book and when it did, there typically seemed to be no purpose for it other than to increase the author’s word count. Truly disappointing as this was looking to be a decent series. Not recommended.
