Shadowmarch

Shadowmarch by Tad Williams.
Tad Williams likes his epic fantasy on the epic scale. 300 and 400 page books are for the weak. He laughs at those so-called “novels”, written by girly-men who probably sit down to pee, and consistently cranks out 600+ page behemoths that are actually pretty good. (His Memory, Sorrow, & Thorn trilogy weighed in at a staggering 2300+ pages and, while a bit long winded at times, was overall a better than average story.)
Happily, it is looking like his latest trilogy (which shares the Shadowmarch title along with the opening book) will actually be better than Memory, Sorrow, & Thorn. Book 1 was a hair under 600 pages, but things moved quickly. The ending was a bit of a surprise and a little abrupt, but I definitely enjoyed the book. It will be interesting to see how he ties together two seemingly independent story lines (those of the Autarch and the Qar) as well as a number of sub-arcs that were left in the air at the end of the book. Looking forward to the next installment.
4/5 gogs.
