The Man Project

This woman voluntarily gave herself daily testosterone injections a testosterone injection (thanks, ecks =P ). Why? I have no idea. However, in the past week, she has, rather eerily and more than a little frighteningly, stated exactly what it is like to be a teenaged to twenty-something male. Maybe I should try out the same with some estrogen, just so I can get a better understanding of the delightful but ever-so-confusing female psyche. On second thought, maybe I better not; if I started growing breasts, I’d just stay in my apartment all day, playing with them.

Double Cheese, Hold the Mushrooms

In one of those why-didn’t-I-think-of-that? forehead smacking moments, there’s a new in-game command for EverQuest players to use: /pizza. Yes, that’s right, EverCrack addicts can now order a delicious Meat Lover’s pan pizza from Pizza Hut without having to drag their atrophied body away from the computer in order to make a phone call. And here I thought installing a mini-fridge and a piss jar by my PC was forward thinking. Brilliant! [via BoingBoing]

Activity

I’m not sure if I’m alone in feeling this way, but during times when I’m not posting much here, I sometimes start feeling like I have to post something. Like I’d be insulting or doing some other sort of disservice to my readers by not posting. It’s not that I feel what I write is that important; I just feel like if you’ve been coming here expecting humor, intelligent discourse, dancing clowns or whatever and suddenly things have dried up, you’ll lose interest.* But here’s the rub. I have found that if I give in to my fears, I find myself stretching to find things to write about. Observations are flat, commentary is dull and tried, the dancing clowns just shuffle around a bit with disinterested looks on their faces. There is no passion in such writings and that, my friends, is something that I’m not about to put up with. ‘Nuff said.

*As an aside, just as personal blogs tend to be a somewhat distilled version of someone’s life, I find it interesting to see my own psychoses coming out due to the blog. The blog is my life and my life is the blog.

Progress

I’d like to extend a hearty “you’re #1″ (with my middle finger) to the asshats at Microsoft who decided it would be a good idea to require a physical CD insertion in order to install the latest batch of Office XP security patches. Both my company and I would like to thank you for requiring us to waste 20 man-hours installing patches to fix your shitty, insecure and bug-ridden software. Way to go, guys. The bill is in the mail and be assured that we’ll be giving a very serious look at OpenOffice when it comes time for the next upgrade. Oh, and I’m going to name my next dog “Microsoft” just so I can take it out back and shoot it.

Pain

Wired has a fascinating article regarding advances in pain management, both during surgery and after, for victims of the war that is currently raging in Iraq. Not only is the technique fascinating to my geeky mind, but the article also offers some insightful looks into the mindsets of persons on all sides of the war. A slightly long read, but worth it in my opinion.

Dumbing Down

David Pescovitz at BoingBoing points out an AP article covering a recent survey of high school students and their knowledge of the First Amendment.

Yet, when told of the exact text of the First Amendment, more than one in
three high school students said it goes too far in the rights it guarantees. Only half of the students said newspapers should be allowed to publish freely without government approval of stories.

The article itself provides no real details as to how and where this study was conducted, but even if it is representative of only a small portion students, the findings are still quite disturbing.
