Is that a 10 foot paper phallus in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
And now for something completely different.
The Register is reporting that “pornogamist” Nick Robinson not only created a 10 foot origami penis, but then proceeded to wave it to and fro from in front of the London Assembly (locally known as the “Glass Bollock” due to its testicular shape). Bloody brilliant, I say.

Disgust
I am truly at a loss for words over this latest piece of news to cross my desk. The Ohio GOP has filed 35,000 pre-election challenges against people who they claim are guilty of voter registration fraud. In addition, in my particular county alone, the OGOP will be putting 200 paid “challengers” at selected polling places to harass voters and generally make the voting process a hassle – presumably in hopes that voters will get fed up with waiting in line and will leave.
I really can’t put into words the absolute disgust that I’m feeling about this. Is this democracy in action? Is this the sort of thing that makes you proud to live in this country? I am sick and tired of all the bullshit that the GOP has been pulling and I truly hope that this sort of behavior acts as a wake-up call to the majority of Americans. It’s time to take back our rights, dammit.
If you’d like to do something about this, both the Election Protection Coalition and the Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights Under Law have lots of information on things you can do to help.
BTW, the two links above from the Dayton Daily News require an asinine registration process. Here are the cached Google versions of the articles: [Link 1] [Link 2]
[update] I see the same thing is starting to happen in Florida, too.

Endorsements
Hey, look at all these newspapers that are endorsing John Kerry. Why, even my current city of residence is on the list, maybe there is some hope for this state… Heck, even The New Yorker, a publication that has never endorsed a candidate, is casting their lot with Kerry. Of course, this growing movement of Kerry backers doesn’t mean that you don’t need to bother with voting this November 2nd. Make sure you get out there and make your voice heard.
As an aside, the brainiacs behind the USA Today/CNN/Gallup polls are still showing that Bush is “in the lead”. You know, despite the fact that they only polled 1,538 people – who have landline telephones – and who stayed on the line long enough to listen to what is essentially a telemarketer. In other words, if the U.S. were full of Luddite shut-ins, Bush would win! You go, pollsters!

Career Choices
Sure, I bitch about my job off and on, and I’m sure you do, too. But the next time you find yourself wishing you could be out of the hellhole you call your workplace, keep in mind you could be doing something much, much worse.

There’s something wrong with the world today
Sigh. Truly, it seems like the bullshit will never end. Avid GogBlog reader, Aficionada, sends word today of a petition to stop Sinclair Broadcast Group (owners of 62 television stations which reach almost 25% of all households in the US – many of them in swing states [NY Times link]) from forcing thier stations to air an anti-Kerry “documentary” (funded by arch-conservatives, natch) shortly before the election in November.
SBG has been guilty of pulling similar bullshit in the past, when they forced stations to not air a Nightline broadcast that read the names of 700 soldiers who had died in Iraq. Oh, and just in case you may think that the spineless weasels at SBG had any sort of class, they’ve now also fired their Washington Bureau Chief for calling a spade a spade and stating that the film was “biased political propaganda, with clear intentions to sway this election.”
When are we going to wake up and realize what is going on? This petition may not actually stop SBG from following through with their plans, but with already over 125,000 signatures it will at least bring this travesty to light. [Stop SBG Petition link] Please note that this petition closes on October 21.
[update] Jay Rosen has a roundup of this situation, including some information on SBG’s plans to begin buying newspapers in the same regions where they have broadcast stations. Is it just me or does this seem like a Bad Thing if it were to come to fruition? [via Dan Gillmor]

Schism
Dan Gillmor points out a recently published piece by Hal Crowther. The article doesn’t necessarily bring to light anything about the Bush Administration for those of you who have been paying attention, but if there is any sort of doubt in your mind about who to vote for (or, as in my case, vote against) this November, you owe it to yourself to read this.
Question forever. Think for yourself.

Guess Who’s Back
Why?
Because the United States currently has, as Jack Womack so succintly puts it, a president who makes Richard Nixon look like Abraham Lincoln.
And because, as the Spanish philospher Unamuno said, “At times, to be silent is to lie.”
So sayeth William Gibson on his blog after taking a year off for personal reasons. An intelligent, thoughtful writer; it’s good to see him back in the blogosphere, even if it’s only for a little while. [via BoingBoing]

Geee, mail.
Just in case you don’t yet have a Gmail account (I think the geek cred from having one of these is rapidly heading downhill), I have in my filthy, dirty hands, several Gmail invites which I would be happy to dole out to whomever replies to this post. No pushing or line jumping, please.

Stupid Chicken
This is just too amusing; not only did this man cut off his own penis after mistaking it for a chicken neck (I’m sure there’s at least one joke to be made here), but after the surprise of his life, his dog then proceeded to use the severed member as a chew toy. Ow. [via BoingBoing]

Listen Up
Certain individuals are currently conspiring to drown me in new music so I thought I’d return the favor. And, as an added bonus, this is a follow-up to a previous post on MP3 blogs. Viva la redux! Anyway, I just thought I’d take a moment to pimp a few blogs that I find to be compatible with my slightly skewed musical tastes.
Firstly, there’s the venerable FluxBlog which not only sports a banner that I’m insanely covetous of, but the proprietor has a simply fabulous ear for all things good and musical. Next up is Scenestars which cropped up several months ago and has continued to present some really good tunage. Finally, there is the somewhat infrequently updated WomenFolk which has shown some flashes of brilliance (and it plays host to one of my guilty little pleasures: the female vocalist). Hope he can keep up the good work.
So what are you doing just standing there? Get off your boomshackalacka and start discovering some new artists! (And, of course, if you like ‘em, be sure to support ‘em.)
